My Trip to the 2025 Dayton Air Show – Thanks, JG-1!

I wasn’t planning to attend the Dayton Air Show this year, 2025 has already been a blur, but that all changed when a longtime Fox3 customer from JG-1|Flyboy, invited me to join their group’s festivities. I’m so glad I said yes.

The JG-1 crew kicked things off Wednesday, and although I arrived late that evening, we all met up bright and early Thursday morning in Wilmington, Ohio. Our first stop? A behind-the-scenes tour of the Wilmington airport tower and, brace yourself, a full-motion Boeing 767 simulator.

Yes, that kind of simulator: full cockpit, hydraulic motion, every switch and knob you'd expect in a real aircraft. We each took turns flying and co-piloting the 767, and let me tell you, I came away with a whole new level of respect for the professionals in the left seat. It was an unforgettable experience, and the JG-1 guys made it even more fun. That night, we capped things off with dinner at Flyboy’s place and a solid evening of DCS chatter, laughs, and nerding out.

On Friday, the group visited the Dayton Air Force Museum, one of my all-time favorite places, but since I’ve been before, I opted to take it easy that day and spend the day exploring with my wife. Judging by their photos, though, they had a blast.

Saturday was showtime. We had incredible seats and access to an air-conditioned tent stocked with food and drinks, yes, air conditioning and F-16s, can’t beat it. The static displays were excellent, and I even got the chance to visit the Army Aviation exhibit where, believe it or not, I flew in an AH-1 Cobra! My first time in a military helicopter, and it was absolutely unforgettable.

As expected, the airshow itself did not disappoint. I was lucky enough to attend back in 2022, but this year featured the USAF Thunderbirds, and they delivered a stellar performance. I also ran into Tugboat from the Jousters and spotted a few other familiar DCS faces.

A huge thankyou goes out to JG-1 and especially to Flyboy for the invite, hospitality, and coordination. It was an awesome weekend getaway, and even better, I got to bring my wife along for the ride. It was the perfect break from Fox3 duties... well, until a stomach bug hit me on the drive home to Atlanta. Let’s just say the return trip was “eventful” and included about six emergency stops. 🤢

Even with that bumpy ending, I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.
